Texture

One of my goals has been to figure out how to use texture effectively. I can't say I've really figured it out yet, but after playing around for awhile today I think this one looks okay. I did a couple on photos of Moses that just looked TERRIBLE--I think its harder to make texture look good when there's a person in the picture (at least for me), but I'm hoping to get the hang of it. Until then, I give you this:

Original:
The side of his face is obviously REALLY blown out, and the rest of the picture is underexposed.
My Edit:
Here's what I did:
-Adjusted the lighting levels
-Adjusted the colour curves
-Ran Coffeeshop Sunkissed--with the brightness turned down on the flare and the lightness adjusted. I also moved the flare so that it would be on the appropriate side of his face
-I ran Coffeeshop Butterscotch Vintage, but I turned it way down to 7% opacity
-Coffeeshop Soft and Dreamy. I changed the colour layer from purple to orange and then turned it down. Then I turned down the ivory fill layer to 60% opacity.
-Finally, I ran noiseware. Whew!
Hmm. . .I've decided that my edit makes him look like a ghost. I'll have to come back and fix it later, but right now I have to hit the books!
Or not. I couldn't resist. I just warmed it up using the temperature slider:

SO busy lately. I did take a couple minutes to go to the store for a new highlighter (I used up my old one in all my frantic studying), and on the way there I saw this bee.

Moses learned his first sign. He's doing the sign for milk in this picture.
And here's one of him eating dinner in his high chair:
Neither of these are edited because I'm just way too busy. What can ya do?

I didn't take this, because I'm in it. I did edit it, though.
My Mothers Day Gift (I took this one):
This is a willowtree mother and child figurine my mother in law sent me when Moses was born. The "halo" on the baby is the ring that Calin gave me for my first Mothers Day. It has Moses' name engraved on one side, his birthstone (Ruby), and his birthdate is engraved on the other side. This was taken with my 50mm and macro lens filter.

A little action happy, here. I promise I won't become one of those people who uses an action on everything, but this was fun. I'll quit it once they lose their novelty. A lot of these are blended combinations of different ones, but they are all by Coffeeshop.
We went to get coffee and go sit by the lake.
Butterscotch vintage turned down to 60% opacity. I think there's also a little S-curve pop.
Soft + Dreamy plus Squeaky Clean.
We saw this Seagull through the car window.
A mix of butterscotch vintage and the sunkissed action.
I don't remember what this one is.
S-Curve Pop.
Soft+ Dreamy, with some of the layers turned down. I think there's some Squeaky Clean in there too.
Moody Pop, with the vignette turned off and turned down to 40% opacity.
I'm not sure exactly what this is a combination of.
Sunkissed and Butterscoth Vintage. This is my favourite combination for this photo.
This is Classic Black and White + Bittersweet Vintage, with Vintage turned down and the high key turned up.
Moody Pop, adjusted.

I've been experimenting with actions since getting Photoshop Elements.
Here's a tip--if you can't afford $80 for Elements 8 (which is $120 in Canada), you can do what I did and buy an older version of Elements on Ebay. It cost me $26, and maybe the newer versions are better, but as I have no frame of reference, Elements 6 suits me just fine.
For this photo, I used Coffeeshop's Butterscotch Vintage action, at 48% opacity. I still did my usual curve and contrast adjustments, and I lightened it quite a bit and lowered the saturation so that the action didn't overpower the photo.

This is my first edit using photoshop elements, which I got last night. I'm still figuring it out, which is why there are two random dots on the background that I can't figure out how to get rid of. I did some curves adjustments, worked on the skin tone using the skin-tone dropper, and then ran my first action, Coffeeshop Little Perk. Then I ran noiseware.

Edit:
I figured out how to get rid of the dots. Yay! I think there are other ways to do it, but what I did was use the eraser tool to erase them, then used the eyedropper tool to select the background colour. Then I switched to the paint bucket tool and filled the spots that I'd erased with the background colour that I selected. Here it is:
May 6, Day 124: Nine Month Photos

It's about time, considering the fact that he's going to be ten months old in a week. Whoopsie.
We had to wait until he was sleeping, because otherwise he won't sit still and will throw the blocks or knock them over.

Then I busted out the macro lens filter (+4) and got some detail shots. His fingers and toes are so grubby. He got some muffin crumbs on them, which you can clearly see with the macro filter. You can also see each and every pore in his sturdy little legs.
Edit:
Now that I look at these again, they're a little oversaturated. I re-edited them in PSE but I'm too lazy to repost the new edits right now. Maybe later.

As I mentioned in other posts, I've been working on my black and white converstions. I think I've come up with a "recipe" that I like, at least for certain photos.

Today my macro lens filters
came. I have a real macro lens
on my wishlist, but until then these will do! I didn't have a lot of time to practice between studying and taking care of Moses, but I did manage to snap a couple pictures of my ring.
To compare, here's a shot a took with my 50 mm lens without the filter.
I also snapped this picture of a squirrel outside in a tree, using my telephoto lens (without a macro filter).
