Day 29: King of Hearts

Today we took some Valentines Day pictures for Moses' baby book and for some cards to send to the grandparents. We FINALLY got some that we can actually use!

Edit: I don't know how I feel about the really desaturated ones. I like the muted background and it gets rid of the colour cast, but I'm not crazy about the background still having colour while Moses looks kinda grey. . .

Day 22: Hard Day's Night

Calin, after doing the early morning shift. I know it's "hot" and blown out, but it captures the mood.

Day 21: Fill the frame

I love this picture, but I'd love it even more if there wasn't a patch of light on his head. It's so hard to keep him still and catch him when he's at the perfect spot AND with the perfect expression. I love his smile, though!

I unfortunately cropped too close to the cheek with this one.I love his expression and the light on his lashes, but I wish I'd left room for him to look into. Rookie mistake.

I left room for him to look into in this one! The whites of his eyes are a tad grey, but it doesn't bother me that much. I think this is the first picture I've taken where I can clearly notice the little freckle on his shoulder. It's his only one.

His eyes are beautiful.

I'm not sure what that purple splotch on his head is, but when I try to crop it out I lose some of his cheek and we can't have that. I decided to just keep the splotch.

Day 19: Little Boy Blue

The framing on this picture would have been better if I had cropped out his sleeper instead of the top of his head.I also wish the lighting was better so I didn't have to use the flash, because it makes him look kind of shiny.

Day 18:I *heart* you

Today's photos need a disclaimer. We are all still sick. We are all still tired. We are all running on 3 hours of sleep. And my son had his shots today, which are never fun. I promise my official Valentines Day photos will have actual effort put into them, be properly set up (ie, no wrinkled blanket), properly edited and hopefully I'll have taken the time to wipe the snot from under my baby's nose beforehand. Today I just needed a picture. Here it is:

Day 9: Catchlights Win!

There's something in photo editing called an eye pop. If you looked at the tutorial I linked, it's clear that its a HUGE pain. I'm trying more and more to rely on good photography rather than editing (who has time to spend hours a day in GIMP?). Yesterday I went to my phototography board and asked them to "teach me like I'm stupid" how to get the eye-pop effect (or catchlights, as they're referred to when not edited in) straight out of the camera. Their advice worked! In the photo above it looks like Moses is cheering for me!  In case you're wondering, it was as simple as facing him towards a window during prime sun time. Who knew?

The one on the left doesn't give the best view of his eyes, but I like the fact that it looks like he's cheering me on!

Here's a similar shot, but with a better look at his eyes.

This one doesn't show his eyes, but I love the expression on his face and his blurred hand in the background.

His left eye is a little soft in this one, but I still like it. Calin says it looks like a political campaign poster, so here's this one, just for fun:

And the original, in colour:

A nice close up of him looking straight at his mama.

P.S: here's an eye-pop I did in GIMP a few months back before I got my new camera. Making the eyes pop in camera definitelty looks more natural.

Day 7: Mr. Sun, Mr. Golden Sun. . .

The sun was streaming through the big picture window into the living room today, so I thought I'd do something with that. I think it gives kind of an angelic halo effect.  Disclaimer: A few of them aren't as sharp as they could be, but it's hard when you're shooting in manual focus with a moving baby. I also think I may have cut off a little too much of his head in the third one, but live and learn!

Bonus: I know the light was way too harsh on this one, and the composition leaves something to be desired, but who can resist a photo of their baby's belly laugh?

Day 2: Father and Son

And a bonus, because I couldn't choose:

Day 1: The Beginning

I’ve decided to do the 365 photo challenge in 2010. Armed with the trusty new D-SLR that my wonderful husband got me for Christmas, I am ready to drastically improve my photography skills and capture this year as it flies by. I’m sure a ton of my photos will be of my son, who turns six months old this month, but I hope to capture other things too. To start things off, my first photo of the New Year:
